Athletics
This term, every Friday afternoon, we have athletics. This includes multiple sports; such as Vortex, Races, Long Jump and Triple Jump. We do this to stay healthy, to exercise, to learn new skills and because it’s FUN!!!! We practice in P.E and in any extra time that we are given. We do this on a Friday afternoon so that our year six teacher, Mr. Cunningham, can choose a squad to compete against other schools in the Athletics competition.
One student said “As a student, I enjoy athletics. My favorite sport is Triple jump.
Clubs
At our school we have been doing clubs for years and years, this term our clubs are gardening club, books and biscuits, football, science, online gaming, and summer sports. The first club is gardening club with Mrs. Smith, (our headteacher) where you plant seeds and small plants and weed around our school to make it more beautiful than it already is. Next is books and biscuits with Mrs. Burns where you eat biscuits and read books. However, before you read and eat you do different activities related to books, such as quizzes.
Trips
On the 20th of May year 5 went to Holdenby House, where we learned about the Tudors. We used herbs to make potions to keep away evil spirits and the plague. We also re-enacted the art of Piking which involved us charging at the adults with Spanish swords. It was a lot of fun.
Year 5 also went to a guitar festival, which was exciting. We were preforming in front of other classes and watching other pupils share their skills. We had to play our guitars on stage in front of 7 other classes, which some people were very nervous about because we haven’t really done that before. We, as a team, won an award for the most enthusiastic group- we were very happy about that!
One other school trip we have all enjoyed was when our school went to play crazy golf. ‘‘yay!’’ It was exciting because everyone had a lot of fun trying to get the golf balls into the holes in the least amount of shots. Some of the holes were particularly tricky, especially the last hole where you had to hit the ball up and around a steep slope. One child took over 20 goes!
On Thursday 12th of June 5 pupils from Year 5 and Year 6 went to compete in the Bikeability Olympics. We had to compete in 5 different activities which focused on different skills. One of the challenges involved cycling on the road; we then had to remember the way back and show how we stay safe around other road users. One pupil said, “I found the road ride the trickiest because sometimes it can be confusing getting left and right correct under pressure.”

Autumn Term Blog (December 2024)
Hello, welcome to our blog. We are the Year 5 blogging team!
This is a blog all about Barleyhurst Park Primary School and how unique it is and why we enjoy it. We are writing this blog so that we can share the events that have happened at our school and hopefully inspire children to join our school so that they can make new friends and learn along the way.
Carol Concert
Over the past few weeks, we have been practising the Christmas songs ready for our annual carol concert which we hold in the school hall. We do this to spread Christmas Joy to our friends and family to get ready for Christmas. Our Key Stage 1 pupils will be practising their Nativity show ready to perform in front of their parents later in December.
Christmas Fayre
Each year we also do a Christmas fayre which has lots of games for the children to play; there’s also a raffle and a tombola that people can win treats and prizes by playing. As well as creating a game to play, each class makes a treat for their parents to buy. Also there’s a stall where you can purchase homemade baked goods, such as cookies, brownies, cupcakes and other tasty treats. The game created by Year 5 was ‘decorate the Christmas tree’ and players had 1 minute to put as many baubles on the tree as possible with prizes available- a big prize for the person who got the most decorations on the tree. Year1’s game ‘Stick the nose on Rudolph’ gave players 3 red balls which had to be thrown onto Rudolph’s face; if the ball stuck players won a prize.
Other Christmas treats
Something we are looking forward to at the end of the year will be our class Christmas parties- they are fun because we get to eat tasty treats and play party games while listening to Christmas tunes. In the last week of term, we will also have a Christmas dinner together in the hall which lots of children enjoy doing. We also look forward to wearing our Christmas jumpers to school on National Christmas Jumper day as well as on Christmas dinner day.
Maths assessments
Year 5 have been trailing a new website called Maths.co.uk.it is a website that instead of printing paper slips for tests and assessments, it lets your teacher create tests that are accessible online, on laptops or tablets. We have found it useful because we are saving the planet by using less paper; it is also good because we get the results straight away. It is easy to use and so far, it has been fun- more fun than paper slips.
Year 6 SATs prep
This week our Year 6 pupils have been preparing for their SATs. The subjects they have been doing are maths, Reading and SPaG (spelling, punctuation and grammar). The reason they have been doing this is so that they are ready for the real SATs later in the year and to make sure they get in the right group/ set in secondary school.
That’s all for now. We look forward to sharing our next update soon.
